A farm boy, a roughneck, a convict, a cowboy picker… RICK SIKES was more than just an Outlaw Music Pioneer, Songwriter and Musician. He was a Rebel, a Leader and a Teacher and left a legacy of wisdom behind.
He loved Jimmie Rodgers and one of his favorite sayings was from a Rodgers’ song. “I like to work, I’m rolling all the time”.
Another of Rick’s favorite sayings was from Teddy Roosevelt: “Always do the best you can with what you have where you are.”
He believed that the harder you work, the luckier you get and kept going through much adversity to accomplish a tremendous amount.
When Rick was honored with the 2003 Special Achievement Recognition Award from the West Texas Music Hall of Fame, Sid Holmes, President and Founder of the organization, had this to say:
“You hung in there when most people would have thrown in the towel, given up completely. Instead, you picked up the pieces, persevering through the years and overcoming all odds. You are a great example for all of us to look up to. The Special Recognition Awards are only given to deserving people like you, and we are glad it means something to you. I feel sure a lot of your strength has come from Jan. You guys are cool, to say the least!”
